Warrants issued for mother of missing 3-year-old

By Donna Swicegood

Published: May 13, 2009

A woman who abducted her 3-year-old son during a visitation Monday will face kidnapping charges.

Statesville Police Department Assistant Chief Bill Halliburton said warrants for kidnapping have been issued for Kira Leneshia Shaw-Wright, 28.

An Amber Alert for Shaw-Wright's 3-year-old son, James Harris, was issued Monday after Shaw-Wright took him from Signal Hill Mall during a regular visitation, Halliburton said.

Shaw-Wright does not have custody of the boy. His grandparents are his legal custodians.

When Shaw-Wright visits her son, she is supposed to be in the company of the boy's grandparents.
"She couldn't have private visitation with him," Halliburton said.

On Monday, Shaw-Wright met with the grandparents and visited with James, Halliburton said.
"While they were walking around the mall, they lost sight of her and the child, and she took off with him," Halliburton said.

Statesville officers are in contact with police in Atlanta, where Shaw-Wright is believed to have gone after taking James.

He said there is no indication that Shaw-Wright would harm James.

"There's nothing in the report to suggest she's been or would be violent with the child," Halliburton said.
However, he said, the manner in which she took the boy is cause for concern.

"Obviously the situation where the child was abducted was not good," he said.

Police were not able to obtain any description on what type of vehicle Shaw-Wright was in when she left the mall.

Since issuing the Amber Alert Monday night, Halliburton said, no calls have come in nor have there been any sightings of either Shaw-Wright or James.

James is a black male, about 3 feet tall, weighing 40 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a gray and black shirt with the words "Short, Cute and Loveable," police said. James was wearing Old Navy jeans and a green and gold jacket.

Shaw-Wright is a black female, 5 feet, 10 inches tall and 100 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes.

She was last seen wearing an orange and black skirt and a white jacket. She has long hair and a medium complexion.

If you have any information, you're asked to call the police department at (704) 878-3406 or 911.

AMBER ALERT: Authorities still searching for missing 3-year-old

From staff and wire reports

Published: May 11, 2009

Updated: 05/12/2009 10:34 am

Police across the Southeast are looking this morning for a 3-year-old boy who was reported missing Monday afternoon at Signal Hill Mall in Statesville.

An amber alert has been issued, and police say they believe the child, James Ashley Harris, was taken by his mother, Kira Leneshia Shaw-Wright, 28.

James' grandparents have legal custody of the child, but Shaw-Wright was visiting with her son at the mall. Statesville Police Department Assistant Chief Bill Halliburton said this was part of a regular visitation schedule, but Shaw-Wright is not supposed to be alone with the boy. Shaw-Wright, James and his grandparents were walking around the mall when the grandparents lost sight of the two, and she left the mall with James, he said.

Police say Wright might be traveling to Atlanta, but there was no sign of her overnight.

Halliburton said warrants for kidnapping have been obtained, and they are working with police in Atlanta in an attempt to locate Shaw-Wright and her son.

Halliburton said police have no idea of what type of vehicle Shaw-Wright is operating.

He said there is no indication that Shaw-Wright might be violent with the boy, but the fact that she kidnapped him is a concern for authorities.

Halliburton said no sightings have been reported and no calls have come in on the case since the Amber Alert was issued Monday night.

James is a black male, about 3 feet tall, weighing 40 pounds. He has black hair, and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a gray and black shirt with the words "Short, Cute and Loveable," police said. James was wearing Old Navy jeans and a green and gold jacket. Shaw-Wright is a black female, 5-10 and 100 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes.

Shaw-Wright was last seen wearing an orange and black skirt and a white jacket. She has long hair and her skin color is medium.

If you have any information or see the child, please contact Statesville Police at 704-878-3406, call 911 or *HP.

Carol:
How sad.. I hope they find the mother soon.  I just don't understand how people can think they can get around the law, even if they are birth parents.  There is obviously a reason he is with the grandparents.

Police seek leads on location of boy taken by mother

From staff reports

Published: May 14, 2009

Authorities have received no information as to the whereabouts of a 3-year-old child taken by his mother Monday from Signal Hill Mall.

An Amber Alert was issued for James Harris, 3, Monday shortly after his mother, Kira Wright-Shaw, 28, left the mall with the boy.

Wright-Shaw doesn't have custody of the boy, but was visiting with him in the presence of his grandparents, who do have custody. She managed to get away from the grandparents and took James with her.

She is believed to be in the Atlanta area.

Statesville Police Department Assistant Chief Bill Halliburton said authorities are working with the U.S. Marshal Service to find Shaw-Wright, but there have been no sightings of either her or James since Monday.

Anyone with information should call the SPD at (704) 878-3406 or 911.
